Bicycle Built for Two

Two Years ago today...

After a year of 30 frames a second humping each other in a smelly studio for the length of a year, a boy fell from a second story balcony and shattered his jaw, and a girl ran all the way to the hospital only to be stopped by his parents in questioning who she was.

"That's my Boyfriend!" she yelled.

Was it her boyfriend? Well...maybe it wasn't discussed officially by the couple...but two years later, they aren't boyfriend and girlfriend. Much rather life partners, co-creators, and support systems for each other in everything from bicycle adventures to laundry.

Happy Anniversary to my BB.
yeah 5 minute photoshop!

Seen and Heard NYC

I realize how sterile i am to weirdness since I've lived in NYC, there used to be a time when the term "subway sleeping bag" made me think a guy brought a sleeping bag on the subway, not about sitting between two guys in FUBU jackets on the subway.

As uncomfortable yet arousing that experience may be, I was forced to confront the reality of my hardness on one particular subway trip. First, it took me a full hour to even realize that it was strange that the guy across from me was wearing nail polish and carrying a pink purse....even after I realized he was a nail polished purse carrying boy.  Plus, on the same trip, a woman ran on the subway screaming that rats are everywhere and they need to stop drumming. Instead of thinking about how crazy she was, I instead spent my time trying to decipher if she meant the rats were drumming....or if there are rats and the people in the subway need to stop drumming because they are brining rats? Or was there supposed to be a period between "rats" and "And". But then why say "and" in the first place?

Either way I like the subway rats. They are cute.

The Menagerie Bear

I returned from the most needed, most fun, most artistically refreshing weekend of my life to a slight sigh of relief. Traveling back to school for senior thesis screenings was doubtful in the beginning. I was immediately notified the day before my departure that an animation 7 month gig I desperately wanted, did not hire me. All doors closed, I felt trapped, despondent, and lost as to what steps to take next.

I guess I'm too methodical and planned in my life. I thought I was going down one path to my goal, and found myself taking another. Somewhere in the mess I realized I was living someone else's dream. If I wanted to be a big time producer or work in the "upper class" of the industry, I am definitely on the fast track. However, it's someone else's dream, someone else's life, and not where I want to fit in. This job, would have been my out of this path, and force me to take the dive into the unknown towards my goal. Does this make sense?

Going back to RIT, seeing my best friends (who I miss like nuts), but mostly their work and their energy really detoxed me. I know student films get a lot of beef, but finally I was seeing work that is untainted by the industry and the lust for status, money, and gigs. It really is about the art, expression, and story. Honestly, I guess I never noticed while I was actually in school how inspiration each person in sofa is in one way or another. Some great work is being produced, and I cant wait to keep coming back to see what is happening there. The bonds formed I'm sure will continue on, just as I can return and not miss a beat with so many friends, I can't wait to work with everyone in the future.

so why the bear?

I had long conversations with my friend Jason. And simply put, he makes films, because he loves to. Where did this passion go? Why is it between jobs I stop creating?

I guess I create in other ways, my etsy shop, house art, presents, surprises for Brian....if anyones in the city and wants to get together to do arts and crafts - I go to a meetup like twice a month :) mostly to collage.

anyways.

I love what I do. So why not just do it? If anything, I've learned from TEG how to get repped as a director by a production company: if you make it they will come. It all makes sense!! Ive been talking to reps and directors and prod companies and they all seemed so interested in my personal projects and what I've been doing, not so much in talking about work.

why?

cuz they are waiting for you to build up your style and name independently before they jump at you.

so why am I rambling on about this?

because it's going to change this whole blog. FOREVER.

Brian and I, over the next year, are going to produce a short stop motion film. Concentrate on filling out the holes in our reel, accentuate our style, and show our range as animators, compositors, and builders, and as a marketable company. Because we're capable of greatness, and we love what we do, and we want to prove to the people who don't know/worked with us this these things!

WELCOME TO THE MENAGERIE BEAR

DUMBO SPACE PROGRAM

Brian and I wandered down the halls aimlessly of the most meandering corridor we've ever had to face. At the end of the hall we come face to face with a metal door, with what seems to be scorch marks on the outside, with Large plain letters that spelled:

DUMBO SPACE PROGRAM

this is obviously what we agreed is going on in there.

We are awaiting an interview for a possible stop motion feature in, what I have dubbed, the stop mo hub of nyc aka jay street in brooklyn. I like it down there.

So we discuss how a person can die from a cockroach:

1.) flies down throat and chokes person to death
2.) person eats food so infested with eggs that it explodes in their stomache
3.) they eat a roach and choke on it
4.) roach is shot at them at such a velocity it impales them
"I think it would squish before it penetrates." - L
"No way, it would squish while penetrates" - B
        "those funky exoskeletons" -L
5.)person slips on cockroach down the steps...

"Wanna bet that that package at their door is a book?" -L
"I think its paper" -B
Our interviewers arrive....
"Oh look, our book came" -interviewers
